Every month I find a new marketing app to try out. The latest one was IG Analyzer. I really liked the app and even upgraded to the paid version. The only thing that bothered me was that IG Analyzer showed who unfollowed me recently and some of my unfollowers were people who I thought of us friends. After the initial “what did I do” response, I took a deeper look at what makes people unfollow accounts.

#1 – Posting Too Frequently

I hate an inconsiderate poster. If I see your posts more than 5 times in a day, you will probably get unfollowed.

#2 – Weird Posts

If you are posting things that make my flesh crawl like pictures of dead animals, pimple popping (unless that is your page theme), or nasty food pic, then I will unsubscribe.

#3 – One-sided Follow

I know all the social media platforms say that it doesn’t have to be mutual, but if we met in person, establish some type of connection and I follow you, then I expect a follow back so we can reconnect in the future. If you don’t follow back I assume you might not reciprocate my thoughts on our connection and so I unfollow too.

#4 – Role Changes

Once we become competitors either in business, in social circles, or in life then I am not following you anymore. It doesn’t have to be with evil intent but I don’t want to focus on what you are doing instead of fulfilling my goals. That doesn’t mean I stalk your page but I don’t want your posts having unsolicited access to my feed.

#5 – Perception vs. Reality

We all show our best sides to social media but if I start to feel like you are intentionally misleading me about who you are, then I won’t validate your lies by continuing to follow.

#6 – Mission Accomplished

I’ve followed people because they had private pages and I heard stories about them. I’ve also followed people because they were in the middle of a juicy argumen and I didn’t want to miss the post. Once the excitement faded, I had no reason to continue following.

#7 – Auto Unfollowed

Most of the time, when I unfollow someone it is because I am using some type of marketing app that automatically unfollows people. The accounts these apps delete are unmutual followers, account who have low engagement rates with me, and people who haven’t posted in the last “X” days. With these apps, I don’t always know who I unfollowed so it really isn’t personal at all.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Please comment to let me know why you have unfollowed accounts.
